I₂Cl₆
Iodine trichloride dimer bonding

Two ICl₃ units form a planar I₂Cl₆ framework through reciprocal chlorine bridges. Each iodine has four bond directions in the molecular plane and two occupied lone-pair regions directed above and below it.

STRUCTURE REASONING

How I₂Cl₆ bridge bonding works.

Each bridge combines an existing I–Cl shared pair with chlorine lone-pair donation toward the neighbouring iodine acceptor direction. The lab retains the common AX₄E₂/sp³d² classroom label while noting that modern hypervalent bonding does not require literal d-orbital hybridisation.

BOND COUNT

2 × 3c–4e bridges + 4 × terminal 2c–2e I–Cl bonds

TERMINAL VS BRIDGE

Bridge I–Cl contacts are longer and weaker per contact than terminal I–Cl bonds.

ADVANCED CONCEPT CHECKLIST

Facts to read from the 3D model.

  1. All eight atoms of the complete I₂Cl₆ framework are shown in one plane.
  2. Each iodine carries two axial lone-pair orbitals perpendicular to the molecular plane.
  3. The two Cl bridges are reciprocal 3c–4e units, not two independent ordinary bonds each.
  4. The displayed I–Cl–I bridge angle is approximately 104° in the model.

SEARCHED QUESTIONS

I₂Cl₆ bridge-bonding FAQ.

How many lone pairs are shown on each iodine in I2Cl6?

The classroom AX₄E₂ model shows two occupied axial lone-pair regions on each iodine, above and below the molecular plane.

Is I2Cl6 planar?

Yes. The complete eight-atom I₂Cl₆ framework is planar in the simulation, while iodine lone-pair regions extend perpendicular to that plane.

What type of bridge bond occurs in I2Cl6?

Each I–Cl–I bridge is described as a three-centre four-electron unit involving chlorine lone-pair donation.
